The news of the recent death of Edouard Carpentier was a sad event for all who knew him.

He was one of the greats of all time in the carpet, his fighting style was welcomed by thousands of fans wherever he appears.

Its strength, muscle, and its ability to address mixed solid gymnastic skills made him a standout in the world of professional wrestling.

I had the pleasure of shooting a series of matches Carpentier was in Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in mid-1960.

He fights opponents who would test all his skills. Whipper Billy Watson, Gene Kiniski, “The Bulldog” Brower Dick and Stan Stasiak

Two issues that Carpentier did in Toronto vividly remain in my memory.

The first step in the Garden. Carpentier had been billed to fight in the main event, however after an initial break, the ring announcer told all participants that “The Flying Frenchman” could not fight for an injury sustained two days earlier in Brampton, Ontario, during a match with veteran Fred Atkins.

The fans, after learning that Edward could not compete, accepted the news without any audible voice displeasure.

Then, to everyone’s surprise – and obvious approval – Carpentier made his way up the ladder of the ramp leading to the ring.

Carpentier was on crutches and in a lot of pain as the injury he suffered was on his left knee. However, this great competitor did not want to disappoint her fans who had come to the gardens to see fight.

The other memory I treasure began in the ring at the Garden, with a main event title match between NWA World Champion Gene Kiniski and Carpentier.

I was determined to get as close as possible to the fighters, in order to get a picture of them standing face to face. Just before the start of his party, the two fighters and the referee Taskerobliged Tiger, and I have the image that I loved.

Carpentier shows off some officials of the Japanese wrestling. Several weeks after Carpentier was announced to appear in the gardens in another main event, and this photographer had an 8×10 print of the Carpentier-Kiniski photo face to face I wanted to be able to present Edouard personally.

I entered the office of Frank Tunney wrestling, photo in hand, hoping that Carpentier would be in the office right now.

My hopes were rewarded, and proudly handed me the picture to Carpentier. He was very happy, and offered to pay for it.

“No way, Edouard, this was my great pleasure.”

That experience was one of the best highlights for me in all the years I have covered professional wrestling.

Off duty police officer in Modesto auto accident

Modesto, CA clear, 58 ° Hi / Lo: 79 ° / 49 °

A Modesto police officer is in serious but stable condition after driving his Jeep Wrangler on Scenic Drive and down an embankment this morning, authorities said.

The officer was not on duty, according to Sgt. Ricardo Armendariz, spokesman for the Modesto Police Department.

Armendariz said that “it appears that alcohol may have been involved, but that could not be confirmed until results of blood tests are determined. The officer was alone in the vehicle.

Emergency workers and officers were called at 12:40 am to the 3000 block of Scenic – Lakewood just where it meets Scenic Avenue – after neighbors reported hearing a crash.

When officers arrived, they found the vehicle down an embankment located on the southern edge of a vacant lot that sits between two houses. Armendariz said the officer was heading south on Lakewood and was directly over pan and, finally, on the embankment.

The off duty officer, whose name was not released because he was not arrested, was taken to a Modesto hospital.

Due to the severity of his injuries, a field sobriety test could not be done. However, a blood test was taken at the hospital.

Armendariz said that a complaint was filed with the Stanislaus County Office of District Attorney. He said this is made in lieu of an arrest for what the city does not have to cover the cost of medical treatment.

He said the prosecutor’s office will weigh evidence, including results of blood tests and decide on the charges or citations, where appropriate, in the file.
