Marin briefs: College of Marin men pummel Ohlone
San Rafael High grad Roberto Hernandez opened the offensive barrage with an early goal and the midfielder tacked on a second score as the College of Marin men’s soccer team routed Ohlone 8-1 in Kentfield on Friday.
“Every once in a while, I think about how coaches described games, but this one was played brilliantly,” COM coach Ben Studholme said. “They did everything well; none of it was a fluke. I don’t think any of the goals were a fluke. It was really fun to coach, I didn’t coach at all.”
Tam grad Musa Manneh added a goal and an assist for COM (1-1-0), and Studholme described him as “the most dynamic player on the field.”
Another former Red-tailed Hawk, Taro Smithson, added a goal and an assist against Ohlone (1-2-0).
“It was fantastic, I honestly as a coach have never seen anything like it,” Studholme said.
“Everyone was up to the challenge, and as their level of confidence rose, so did the actual execution.”

No criminal charges in Montco heat deaths

NORRISTOWN — The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office found no criminal negligence in its investigation into the heat-related July deaths of three county men.
Jerry Snavely, 62, and John Malkasian, 53, both of Norristown, were found dead inside a residence on July 9. John Snyder, 56, of Pennsburg, was found dead inside his group home three days later.
All three suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and were clients of the Montgomery County Behavioral Health/Developmental Disabilities Department; however, each lived independently without need of outside care, according to DA Risa Vetri Ferman.
Because the men were not care-dependent individuals, criminal liability was not in question.
"They were living in (a) situation successfully on their own and could provide for themselves," Ferman said.
Snavely and Malkasian were found dead inside an unventilated apartment on Pearl Street. On July 12, Snyder was found in a closed-up third-floor apartment in Pennsburg.
Anticipating extreme heat that week, the county Health Department issued a Code Red heat warning several days before the Norristown men died. Outside temperatures reached 100 on two days, though it was slightly cooler later in the week.
Snavely was found in the rear bedroom of his residence just after 10 a.m. in a kneeling position with his head resting between the bed and an end table, according to a Norristown Police report. He was last seen alive two days before the bodies were discovered.
Malkasian, who lived on Haws Avenue, was discovered on the floor of Snavely's apartment in the front bedroom with several soda bottles at his feet.
Neither body showed signs of trauma, and police quickly ruled out foul play.
Norristown officers were called to Apartment No. 3 at the Pearl Street address after the property's owner discovered the men. At that time, the residence's interior temperature was reportedly about 110 degrees.
A single box fan found inside the residence was reportedly not working. But, authorities said, even had it been functioning, without ventilation it is unlikely the fan would have saved the men's lives.
County mental health officials reportedly helped identify the two Norristown victims.
"It was a very sad situation," Ferman said.
County Coroner Dr. Walter Hofman concluded all three died of heat-related causes.
According to health officials, electric fans may provide some comfort on hot days, but when temperatures reach the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. For residents to have any chance of finding relief in extreme heat, fans must be operated while windows are open.
"The windows were shut tight," the coroner said, adding the temperature inside the Pennsburg apartment reached at least 95 degrees.
Following the deaths, the state Department of Public Welfare and county DA launched separate inquiries into the deaths. The state agency's investigation continues.
